Project Overview
I was commissioned to design a social media post for Facebook and Instagram and produce two full-colour, single-sided posters in A3 and A5 portrait formats to support a 12-hour tennis marathon at Telford Tennis Centre. The event, held on Friday, 30th May, was organised to raise funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough and to honour the exceptional care the hospice had provided to a close family member during their final days.
Objective
The objective was to create a tennis-themed design that clearly communicated all key event details, including the Telford Tennis Centre and Sue Ryder Hospice logos, the fundraiser date, and a scannable QR code linking directly to the hospice’s fundraising page. Another goal was to develop promotional materials that encouraged participation from local tennis players, fill each hourly session, and generate broader community interest and engagement in support of the fundraiser.
Design Approach
I began with a client briefing to gather all essential information for the poster, including event details, date, and requirements for both the poster and accompanying social media assets. Based on the client’s design goals, the brief called for simple illustrations and a green color palette to encourage audience engagement and donations.
I developed four initial sketches, exploring layout and composition to create visual interest and clarity. These concepts were presented to the client for feedback, after which a final direction was selected. I then created custom illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, including a tennis ball, net, and racket, to guide the viewer’s eye toward the key information.
For typography, I selected the Poppins typeface for its bold, legible headlines and emphasized the event date in white to ensure it stood out against the background. I also generated a functional QR code linked directly to the hospice fundraiser and positioned it centrally for easy scanning.
All logos were prepared in high resolution to maintain clarity in print. Key details such as the date and time were highlighted in white, while the sponsor name and tribute information were set in yellow to create a strong contrast against the green background and establish a clear visual hierarchy.
Outcome
After completing the initial concept, I presented it to the client for feedback before adapting the design for social media use. I used Adobe Illustrator for the custom illustrations and Adobe InDesign for layout, preparing the final poster artwork in CMYK as print-ready PDFs with bleeds and crop marks.
Social media assets were resized and exported as RGB PNGs for Facebook and Instagram, ensuring consistent branding across all channels. The posters were professionally printed and displayed at the tennis centre several days before the event, helping encourage players to book time slots and participate on the day.
Conclusion
The marathon raised over £300 during the event, bringing the running total to £896.88. This outcome reflected the generosity and enthusiasm of the tennis community, including players, their families, and friends, and made a meaningful contribution to supporting the hospice’s vital work in providing end-of-life care.
Results
The community responded enthusiastically, and support continued to grow in the days following the event. The fundraiser ultimately raised over £1,000 for the hospice, directly contributing to an additional 35 hours of expert patient care. The event successfully achieved its goals bringing the community together in support of a meaningful cause.
